Artist statement

Figurative artist Liz Adams creates vivid worlds filled with sensitive portraits, singers and sea creatures, sweets and pastries, bubbles and flowers. Her imagination finds a playful harmony beyond reality. Often working larger than life, she draws inspiration from Renaissance imagery as well as Greek Mythology. Her works have a painterly freshness with symbols that merge together to form a unique visual symphony.

A figurative painter in France

Liz Adams grew up in a warm southern household outside of Atlanta, Georgia. As an imaginative child, she loved creating costumes, climbing trees and sketching. When she made her first oil painting at age 18, she knew she had found her calling. She received her BFA in Drawing and Painting at Georgia State University. Shortly after, her love of painting took her to New York to study figurative painting intensively with some of the best figurative artists in the country at The Art Students League of New York and the National Academy School of Fine Art. Liz was selected for the Newington Cropsey Foundation for the Arts Scholarship Program in Florence, Italy in 2008 where she spent a summer studying Renaissance Art History at Studio Art Center International and working in her studio space. She also had the opportunity to attend a Gross Anatomy Course at Drexel University in Philadelphia 2009 where she was able to study and draw human anatomy.

In 2015 Liz was a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields grant for figurative artists with her large scale portrait work. She was also awarded a residency at Vytlacil in Sparkill, NY. In 2016 Liz was invited to be a part of Heritage Space « Month in Arts » Residency in Hanoi, Vietnam where she taught portrait workshops and painted Vietnamese landscapes included in group exhibition of international artists.

Liz has participated in art shows in NYC and across the US as well as Canada, Vietnam and France. Her works are included in numerous private collections and have been published in American Artist’s Drawing Magazine, North Light Art Book’s Strokes of Genius 5: Composition and Manifest INPA 6. She has taught classes at The Art Students League and The Art Center NY. In 2020, Liz relocated to Paris, France where she was awarded a Talent Visa based on her artistic achievement. She works out of her studio in Paris and continues to exhibit her work. In addition, she takes portrait commissions and teaches art classes.
